Like 9-1-1 in a medical emergency, 2-1-1 is a helpline to help provide referrals to over 30,000 programs to assist with food, housing, financial assistance, utility assistance and more. Help is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, from anywhere in the state of Michigan. Call 2-1-1 or search the online database to access statewide programs and services.

Michigan Works! centers can help individuals to find a job or gain a new skill or career. These locations offer a number of employment services to single moms in need.

Family Independence Program (FIP)

FIP helps single moms become independent and self-supporting by providing temporary cash assistance to help pay for expenses such as heat, rent, food, utilities, clothing. FIP applicants may be assigned to the P.A.T.H. program for assistance in finding a job or to develop needed job skills. Help with transportation, childcare and other needs related to employment and training may be provided.

This program assists single moms with paying their mortgage and also helps those who need assistance avoid foreclosure. Various programs include local moratoriums, counseling services and other solutions.

Michigan Housing Vouchers for Rent Assistance

HUD is a resource the Public Housing Authority offers to low-income single moms. For households with special needs or an elderly member, additional housing programs are made available. Contact your local Public Housing Agency to obtain more information on how to apply for these vouchers.

Home Ownership Services

If you are at-risk of losing your home, Home Ownership Services may be able to provide payment for services such as: home mortgage or land contract payments, including principal, interest, legal fees and escrow for taxes and insurance, property taxes and fees, mobile home lot rent for owners or purchasers of mobile homes, insurance coverage required by a mortgage or land contract.

Assists with home repairs to correct unsafe conditions and restore essential services such as a furnace, hot water heater, or septic system.

Home Heating Credit

Home Heating Credit offers support for heating costs through the state of Michigan. Eligibility is based on income. Applications are available from mid- to late January and may be made through September 30 of each year.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Single mothers in need can receive help from energy companies and/or county programs. Grants, payment plans, and other financial support for seniors and low income individuals may also be available.

Heat Assistance through State Emergency Relief

An SER payment for heat or non-heat electricity service qualifies your household for additional energy services through the Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP). Call 2-1-1 for a referral to a MEAP grantee to see what other assistance you may be eligible to receive.

Weatherization Assistance

Weatherization Assistance Program provides free home energy conservation services to low-income Michigan homeowners and renters. Services reduce energy use and lower utility bills. Services typically include: wall insulation, attic insulation and ventilation, foundation insulation, air leakage reduction, smoke detectors, and dryer venting.

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) helps low- to moderate-income workers and families get a tax break. If you qualify, you can use the credit to reduce the taxes you owe – and maybe increase your refund.

Burial Assistance

Medicaid and CHIP Health Insurance

Many single moms qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid is low-cost or free health insurance provided by the state of Michigan. If you make too much money to qualify for Medicaid, you may still be able to sign up your kids (or yourself, if you’re pregnant) for insurance through the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
